Markdown New Line
Press Enter once and nothing happens — press it twice and a paragraph appears. Test markdown new line behavior live and see exactly where your line breaks land.

First line Second line
Markdown new line rules surprise everyone: you press Enter at the end of a line, and the rendered text simply continues on the same paragraph. That is not a bug. In CommonMark, a single newline is a soft break, and the renderer is allowed to join the lines when laying out text. A real markdown new line — one that starts a visibly new block — needs either a blank line for a new paragraph or a trailing marker for a hard break.
The playground above makes the difference physical. The Single newline example contains two lines separated by one Enter; watch the preview merge them into a single flowing paragraph. Switch to the Blank line example and the same text splits into two separate paragraphs with spacing between them. Edit anything and the preview updates instantly, so you can build an intuition for markdown new line behavior instead of memorizing rules.
This page focuses on the paragraph question: what a markdown new line does to document structure. If your goal is forcing a line break inside the same paragraph — address blocks, poem lines, keyboard shortcut lists — the markdown line break page covers two-space and backslash hard breaks. Both pages run the same engine in your browser, with no upload and no account.
Markdown new line cheat sheet

| line one line two | One paragraph with a hard break (two trailing spaces) |
| line one\ line two | One paragraph with a hard break (backslash) |
| one two | Two paragraphs — extra blank lines do not stack more space |
How to add a markdown new line the right way
- 1
Decide what you actually want
A new paragraph, or a line break inside the paragraph? The markdown new line you want for prose is a paragraph; for verse and addresses you want a hard break inside one block.
- 2
Press Enter twice for a new paragraph
A blank line is the markdown new line that starts a fresh block. Everything between two blank lines is one paragraph, no matter how many single newlines are inside it.
- 3
Verify in the live preview
Use the example chips above to flip between single newline and blank line, then watch the preview pane. Seeing the markdown new line behavior rendered is faster than reading about it.
- 4
Avoid Enter-mashing
Stacking blank lines adds nothing — renderers collapse consecutive blank lines into one paragraph gap. One blank line is the complete markdown new line syntax for a new block.
Why a markdown new line does not break by default
Markdown was designed around reflowable text: the same paragraph should wrap gracefully on a phone screen and a widescreen monitor. If every single Enter produced a visible break, text pasted from terminals or wrapped by an editor would shatter into fragments. So the markdown new line rule treats one newline as a suggestion that the renderer may ignore — paragraphs, not lines, are the unit of layout.
Some platforms disagree. GitHub comments, chat apps, and several wiki flavors render single newlines as hard breaks to match how people type messages. That divergence is exactly why this page renders with the standard CommonMark interpretation: your document behaves predictably when you later move it to a stricter renderer. When you do need an in-paragraph break everywhere, use the explicit hard-break syntax described on the markdown line break page.
Markdown new line: what to type and what to avoid
Roses are red Violets are blue
Roses are red Violets are blue
Prose sentences separated by one newline merge into a single paragraph. A blank line gives each sentence its own block.
Adding five newlines for spacing
One blank line
Extra blank lines are collapsed. The markdown new line block spacing is fixed by the renderer's stylesheet, not by your Enter count.
Pressing Shift+Enter and expecting a break
Two trailing spaces or a backslash
Markdown source has no concept of Shift+Enter. For a hard break inside a paragraph use the explicit syntax from the markdown line break page.
Paragraphs are structural, not visual
Treat the markdown new line as a structural decision: a blank line means a new thought, a soft newline means the same thought continuing. Screen readers, outline tools, and PDF export all use paragraph boundaries — clean paragraph structure in the source becomes clean document structure everywhere else.
